After several years of preparation, the new domain extension .app was launched on 8 May 2018. The Charleston Road Registry Inc., a subsidiary of Google, was awarded the contract to manage the .app domains in an auction in 2015. There were 12 other companies in the race that would have liked to offer the coveted ending .app. Google, respectively the Charleston Road Registry Inc., won the auction with a bid of more than 25 million US dollars. Currently more than 270'000 domains are already registered (end of June 2018).

Domain experts from all over the world are convinced that the .app extension will be one of the more successful new domain extensions and will retain its attractiveness over a longer period of time.
